Staying focused on our goals could be quite challenging.
At the end of the year, many people realize that they got off track at some point and were not able to achieve the majority of their goals.
The ability to overcome the distractions that come our way on the journey to achieving our goals is a key determinant to if we’ll achieve our goals or not.
The good news is that we can learn how to resist distractions and focus on our goals. Here are five ways to do it:
1. Find out what motivates you
Staying motivated is one of the major ways to keep you focused on your goals.
Look for incentives that will push you to follow through on your goals. Create systems that make the steps to achieving your goals fun and creative.
2. Write them down
Having your goals only in your mind will not get you very far. Write your goals down and place it somewhere you get to see it everyday.
As you wake up in the morning and look at them, you’ll be determined to focus on achieving them.
3. Manage your time well
Effective time management is extremely important in keeping you focused. Break your goals into simple daily tasks and allocate time to each of them.
Don’t try to do so much in one day so you don’t get overwhelmed. Start with the hardest and most important tasks.
Take breaks. You can use the 52/17 rule where you focus on a task for 52 minutes and rest for 17 minutes.
Or the Pomodoro technique where you work for 1 hr 40 minutes and rest for 25 minutes.
4. Pay attention to your environment
It is absolutely impossible to maintain focus in a noisy or disorganized environment. Get your workspace organized and listen to quiet soothing sounds that will help you focus.
5. Evaluate your progress
From time to time, look back and see how well you’re doing. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re falling short of your expectations. Resolve to do better and continue.
Lastly and most importantly, start your day with God and commit your tasks into His hands. We often underestimate the power of doing this but it’s a powerful way to maintain focus.
Talk to Him throughout the day about your goals and ask Him to help you avoid distractions.
This year, we’re going to do better and be better!!
