The biggest distractions to your Christian faith and how to avoid them

Currently, I am listening to Who I am by Hillsong worship

Hi everyone! Long time no blog.

Hahaha ever since I started my YouTube channel, I seem to have focused totally on it and looked away from writing blogs. I apologize.

This blog is and will always be my first baby.

However, to see and read from me more often, please follow me on Instagram, Facebook and join my telegram channel. You should also subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven’t.

Today, I want to share a few things with you on our Christian faith and distractions. It is no news that we live in perilous times. The world is darker now than ever. And I don’t mean physically dark. I mean the activity of different foreign spirits is on the increase.

They don’t come physically as scary creatures with horns. No. They come subtly, quietly infusing different systems and minds through different tactics.

These things do not run away from us just because we’re believers. They still stroll towards us once in a while. They come and end up trying to distract us from our faith and relationship with Jesus.

Terrible things happen when we lose focus of Jesus, ask Peter.

While we live on earth, we must be constantly reminded that this world is not our home. We’re just here for a while. We will have to go home at some point.

Knowing this should help us to be cautious and wary of anything that tries to take our face away from the faith. I am sharing a few of these things today and my suggestion on how you can avoid or overcome them.

Of course, the Holy Spirit is your best guide through these things so even after reading through, trust the Holy Spirit to guide and see you through.

Media, particularly Social media: I’m sure you almost predicted this. Social media is the biggest distraction for almost everyone. If you haven’t taught yourself how to be disciplined and know how to put your phone away, you will struggle with this terribly. I don’t know what to suggest for this distraction but I’ll share a few things I do; I had to tell myself that I am the owner of my phone and not the other way round. My phone does not own me, so I can not be subject to it. So, I made the decision to pray first thing every morning and possibly study a devotional before I even pick my phone or go on social media. Also, during the day, whenever I feel like I have been on my phone for too long, I just keep it aside and do other things offline. This really helped me.

Lies from the devil:
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

The Bible tells us that Satan is a liar and the father of lies. Satan is a master of senses and knows how a normal (carnal) mind works. So he brings all forms of lies before you. Many of which may make sense judging from what your current reality looks like. Allowing the lies of the devil into your mind makes you deaf to what God is saying, there by distracting you from Jesus who should be your focus. For this, reading the word of God more often is an antidote. Declaring every great thing the Bible says about you and saying it until you believe it. You are chosen, not forsaken. God is for you, not against you! You are a child of God. ❤

Activities: Work, school, study, even personal development. These things are all good, but they have a way of shifting our focus and making us concentrate on them. You can get so carried away with life that you forget godliness. The way out of this is to maintain a great prayer life. Set out time during your Lunch breaks or just in the middle of your day to pray, look through your Bible or just sit still before God.

Earthly achievements: These days, everyone is pursuing something. Getting that degree, publishing that book, organizing that seminar, and so on. Whether we admit it or not these things can be huge distractions to our walk with Jesus. You can get so carried away by them that you lose sight of things of eternal value. My suggestion for this is to always keep Christ at the centre of your life. Let it all be through Him and about Him.

Carry God along in your activities. Remind yourself of eternity and that there is an achievement that exceeds all the achievements here on earth. Be kingdom minded, knowing that you are in this world but you are not of this world.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Stop storing up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But keep on storing up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal, because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Challenges: When we’re faced with tough situations, we tend to look everywhere but God. Challenges have a way of sapping our strength and faith and making us look like we have no hope. When this happens, turn back to the source of your strength. Your Hope and Love. Instead of running around, run to God.

Working for God: Yes, you read it right. Revelation 2:3-4 You also possess endurance and have tolerated many things because of My name and have not grown weary. But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

Remember that story of Martha and Mary in the Bible? Yeah.

So many people choose to be Marthas today. Going over and beyond for God. Doing so much for Him but very little with Him. Working for God, if not balanced can be a distraction to your Christian faith. Kingdom service in any form is great but your priority should be fellowship with God. Everything else should flow from this.

What other distractions are there to our Christian faith and how do you avoid them? Let me hear from you in the comments below.
